Badgers

Plan of badger sets and habitat useThe ecologists at Oatlands Ecology are experienced badger surveyors. Our comprehensive surveys aim to identify paths, commuting routes, feeding areas and territorial boundaries.
We can:
• Determine at an early stage whether a development is likely to have an impact on badgers
• Carry out badger surveys: locating setts, pathways, feeding areas and territorial boundaries
• Design and execute mitigation to offset impacts to badgers
• Prepare Method Statements to prevent impacts to badgers
• Successfully apply for badger mitigation licences

Ecology
Each badger social group occupies a territory that contains several setts and the clans feeding grounds.  Setts are usually constructed in undisturbed areas of woodland and scrub, although are commonly found along hedgerows, railway and road embankments and disused brownfield sites in surprisingly urban areas.

Legislation
Although widespread and relatively common in the UK persecution remains a major problem and badgers and their setts receive strong legal protection under the Badger Act 1992.

Issues
Badgers are extremely vulnerable to development which can result in increased disturbance and persecution, the fragmentation of territories and the isolation of social group
