Hedgerow surveys

ancient species rich hedgerowsThe ecologists at Oatlands Ecology are experienced hedgerow surveyors.
We can:
• Determine at an early stage whether a development is likily to affect “Important” hedgerows
• Carry out surveys to assess the ecological value of hedgerows
• Design measures to avoid, or mitigate against, impacts to hedgerows
• Prepare Method Statements to prevent impacts to hedgerows

Legislation and Status
Hedgerows are arguably the most important ecological feature in the UK.

Hedgrows classified as ecologicallly or culturally "Important" are protected under the Hedgerows Regulations 1997. They are listed as a Habitat of Principal Importance under Section 41 of the NERC Act 2006 and as a UK Biodiversity Action Plan Priority Habitat. It is an offence to remove or destroy “Important” hedgerows without permission from the local planning authority and local planning authorities have a legal duty to consider impacts to hedgerows prior to granting planning permission.

Developers must submit a “Hedgerow Removal Notice” prior to the removal of any hedgerow over 20m in length, over 30 years old and which supports certain species of plants.
